2010 Awards Contest
Objective
Promote and reward the talent of young digital content creators.
Support
The NAD Centre's Awards of excellence contest is organized by the National Animation and Design Centre and benefits from the financial support resulting of a fund-raising campaign from companies and individuals working in the television, film and video games industries. This year's funding objective is to award 8 awards of $1,000 (first prize) and 8 awards of $500 (second prize)) to reward the best 16 student works out of 8 projects carried out by 50 graduates of the Video Games and Film and Television programs. Furthermore, 4 special mentions of $125 each will be granted to 2 students of each program to highlight the best artistic and technical advancement. Also Passes for the International Game Summit and a gift-bag from Journal Metro will be granted to the special mentions.
Admissibility
The Awards of Excellence Contest is opened to the NAD Centre's GRADUATES of the 3D Animation and Visual Effects for Film and Television and Design and 3D Digital Art Video Games programs, that have COMPLETED their training in 2009 (sessions Fall 2008 and Winter 2009). Candidates must have given in all their projects.
Submission
Pre-selection will be achieved based on all the work that a student or a student team will have submitted throughout the year. This includes 4 categories in Film and Television and 4 in Video Games.
Awards projects
3D Animation and Visual Effects for Film and Television Program
- Category 1: Production of a 30 to 45 sec. CG animation film
- Category 2: Production of a 30 to 45 sec. CG animation film in a non-photorealistic render
- Category 3: Compositing exercise of integrating live action with digital material
- Category 4: Final exercise specific to one's field of specialty such as: matte painting, animation or modeling.
- Category 1: character animation
- Category 2: character modelling
- Category 3: level art
- Category 4: level and game design
Selection and Jury
Candidate's files are presented for pre-selection to a committee formed by the members of the staff of the NAD Centre. The committee will determine 4 to 6 finalists by category namely 24 demo finalists max in the Film and Television program and 24 demo finalists max in the Video Games program.
The finalist's dossiers will then be evaluated in final selection by a jury formed by representatives of industry companies that have contributed to the fund-raising campaign as sponsors.
The jury will choose 16 winners among the finalists; 8 for the Design and Digital Art in Video Games program, and 8 for the 3D Animation and Visual Effects in Film and Television. If the chosen project has been produced by a team, its members will share the Award. Finalists will know the results of the competition at the Awards of Excellence Gala that will be held June 10, 2010.
