Computer Graphics
Quebec, A Pioneer in Computer Graphics
Quebec's technological reputation is based on a series of innovations namely in the fields of computer graphic design. In the late 1980s, Softimage and, shortly thereafter, Discreet (now Autodesk) developed specialized software, in Montreal, which enable the creation of objects, environments, animations and visual effects in three dimensions. These constantly improved upon technologies henceforth constitute a global reference in several fields (film, television, interactive games, Web, design, simulation, industrial design, etc.).
The Quebec visual effects and animation production industry groups together several international companies, which have an international presence such as Groupe Image Buzz, Big Bang FX, Hybride Technologies, Cinégroupe, Digital Dimension, E-Motion, the Technicolor Labs, etc. As for the interactive gaming industry itself, it holds more than 30 development studios such as Ubisoft, Electronics Art Montreal, A2M, Gameloft, Beenox Activision, Sarbakan, EA Mobile and recently, the British giant, Eidos. A vast number of SMBs have also arrived on the scene and, combined with the major players mentioned above, they create a strongly established and diversified industry.
Quebec as a whole, and Montreal in particular, thus holds all the assets to become a great economic player in the field of computer graphics. The province is home to production, postproduction and software development companies.
Montreal As a World Centre of Excellence
Computer graphics is a technology that is integrated within the industrial subset of information and communications technologies (ICT). The ICT cluster in Montreal represents more than 110,000 jobs spread among 2,700 companies. Montreal is thus considered a centre of excellence; ranked 9th among the great North American metropolitan cities regarding the number of ICT jobs and 4th regarding employment growth in this sector.
Montreal, a city that is recognized internationally, was named as a "Global Fast City", outside of the United States, by the prestigious Fast Company magazine. In addition, Wired magazine ranked Montreal among the first four gaming world centres. The competitive operational costs, the qualified labour, the dynamic and extremely advanced research and development are all recognized assets, which make Greater Montreal a centre of excellence in the ICT field.
